Housed
in the Smithfield Building, once occupied by the likes of British Home Stores,
and referred to as ‘the Harrods of the North’ the shop is situated in what was
once the Victorian working market hub, and a major post war shopping district;
Manchester’s Northern Quarter. Now it is the most vibrant and energetic areas
of one of England’s most forward thinking cities, with a rich heritage in
music, fashion and design, and Smithfield is right at the heart of it.
As
a tribute to the fascinating history of the premises and surroundings, the shop
is called Smithfield; the logo is a Smithfield collie, a dog synonymous with
hard work and a fiery temperament.
The
shop, boasting a striking, interesting and unique interior, made from 100%
recycled materials, by sustainable designer Peter Masters, will stock a host of
Scandinavian and European brands including: Wood Wood, Spitfire Design, On
Tour, Organic label Knowledge Cotton Apparel, Dunderdon and local brand Three
Crowns, as well as selected music titles from local labels Fat City Recordings
and Electrik Souls.
Watched over by resident
cardboard Smithfield collies are everyday essentials and staple wardrobe
classics, including a variety of shirts, knits and outwear. With an
increasingly mature aesthetic and relaxed nature the shop will fit right into
the creative buzz of the Northern Quarter.
The focus behind the
shop, both interior and contents, is that to stand out from the crowd it shouldn’t
cost the earth… literally.
If you are in the area be
sure to check out Smithfield, or otherwise check out the website at www.smithfield-clothing.
