An Evening with Bernard Lewis
6:00pm - Thursday 4th December
Prince of Wales Pub, Prince of Wales Road, Kentish Town, NW5 3LT
A unique chance to meet a true fashion retailing legend, Bernard Lewis, the founder of River Island, Chelsea Girl and Lewis Separates
From a single hand-knitting shop in north London, Bernard Lewis, with his family, built up a series of innovative and revolutionary fashion retailing concepts that have transformed how Britain shops. As far back as the late 1950s and early 1960s, he realised that he should be designing his own collections, he should be selling “own label” products, and he should be importing from the low-cost Far East.
He was one of the first UK retailers to have his own in-house design studio. He also realised the importance of building up a property portfolio, so as not just to work for the landlords. He is admired by many of the top names in fashion retailing for his business acumen, his attention to detail, and his amazing eye for a fashion winner.
Having established Lewis Separates as a national name, he transformed that chain into Chelsea Girl, one of the iconic fashion businesses of the 1960s. Even more remarkably, in the early 1980s he was then able to transform Chelsea Girl into River Island, which added menswear to his previous womenswear successes. To have created one ground-breaking fashion business is remarkable; to have created three of such power is a unique achievement.
Bernard Lewis received a standing ovation from his peers when he was awarded the Drapers Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. He is the fashion retailers’ fashion retailer.
The London Fashion Network is proud to present An Evening With Bernard Lewis, in which Mr Lewis will be interviewed on stage by Eric Musgrave. He will also take questions from the audience on his six decades at the top.
The venue is The Prince of Wales, Prince of Wales Road, Kentish Town, London NW5 3LT, on Thursday December 4. Doors open at 6pm for a prompt start at 6.30pm.
