Ask The Experts: Headwear at Ascot
Jen Scott-Russell is a Milliner based in Manchester’s Northern Quarter where she works from her enchanting workroom in H’Atelier, Stevenson Square. As an expert in her field The Fashion Network asked Jen for her thoughts on the recent Ascot dress code changes and how it might affect her business.
The Fashion Network: What are your thoughts on the Ascot dress code change and how it will affect your business?
Jen Scott-Russell: Without hesitation I am all in favour of the new dress code. Ascot needs to regain the sense of occasion and elegance it deserves - and which has been lamentably absent in recent years - as a world-renowned social and fashion event. It is a well-known fact that I have always deplored the “fascinator” , mostly worn as an afterthought - anything worn on the head should be an integral part of the whole outfit that adds to, rather than detracts from the overall look.
I am confident that this can only be good news for my business, and I hope that lots of women will be encouraged to discover just what a difference the “right” hat can make, both to the way they look and to the way they feel.

TFN: Will some clients find it difficult to choose styles that are within the guidelines?
JSR: There is no reason why they should, if they are willing to take advice from the experts and embrace the currently unfashionable idea that it is possible to exude sex-appeal and allure without showing acres of flesh. Think Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, even Doris Day..... just forget Madonna.
As for the hat, just go to a professional and try some on – get over the fear! If the hat’s made as it should be, to suit the wearer’s face, hair and outfit, I promise you the result will amaze and delight.
TFN: Is there room for creativity with the new guidelines?
JSR: Definitely. In fact this forced re-think should be regarded as a blessing. Designers will need to look afresh at what their clients need, which in some cases with the new code will not be what they want. As a milliner it will be a welcome challenge.
TFN: Are you currently working on Ascot hats for clients, have they had to alter to fit the new guidelines?
JSR: I am in the preliminary stages of design for some clients, and so far only one will need to be amended, and then not radically. If you know what you’re doing you can get an awful lot of hat on a 4 inch base!
