Fashion Loses A Prince
By Editor, Ryan Cooper-Brown
Last week saw the premature demise of one of the fashion greats Mr Yves Saint Laurent. The designer power house’s funeral took place this week in Paris, after battling brain cancer. The 71 year old was renowned for his masterful tailoring skills as well as being a major influence in sixties fashion.
Born in 1936 he started his career in Paris after taking the place of couture legend Christian Dior at the age of 21. Throughout his working life, until he retired in 2002 he continued to wheel his talent by constantly reviving classics and creating new timeless pieces such as women’s suits.
As you can expect his funeral was as glamorous as the life he lived, as mourners included the French president Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife, Valentino, Jean Paul Gaultier and holding up the British flag was Vivienne Westwood. As part of the proceedings of which you can’t get more glam, the classic film actress Catherine Deneuve read a poem to hundreds of fans outside the funeral on a big screen.
Yves Saint Laurent exuded everything about couture fashion, whether you call it posh, high end or designer he was one of those that made it what it is and he will be sadly missed.
