Halston Heritage and Sex and the City
Well the wait is finally over! The film that every fashion conscious female has been eagerly anticipating has arrived; the ‘fabulous’ second instalment of ‘Sex and the City Two’ hit cinemas across the globe.
That’s right ladies hold onto your vintage Dior purses and pop on your sexy Manolos because it’s time to relax, sip a Cosmo and enjoy the most eagerly anticipated film of 2010. It definitely doesn’t disappoint.
Critics and fans alike have argued over the storyline and many have viewed it as very unrealistic but if you are a fashion obsessed individual then you will adore this film. In other words Patricia Field has accomplished greatness once again. From the opening title you are bombarded with beautiful dresses and stylish outfits. This film is simply over-flowing with designer names, from the sexy Pucci dress Carrie wears for her date with Aiden to the simple yet elegant Alexander Wang t-shirt and skirt she ‘casually’ wears around her old apartment. It’s effortlessly elegant and stylish throughout.
However the film definitely tips its hat to one designer alone- the elegant genius of Roy Halston. His stunning creations litter this film from start to finish.
Roy Halston Frowick originally began as a milliner and after moving to New York began work at the famous department store Bergdorf Goodman where he made his name. It was there that he changed direction slightly and began designing women’s clothing. He learnt a key lesson that most men wait a lifetime to uncover - he worked out what women truly want. It was in 1966 that he first launched his collection for the infamous store; then two years later he parted ways with Bergdorf Goodman and started up his own women’s line. This was a huge success and allowed him to create beautiful yet functional pieces for the modern American woman. His designs were subtle and flattering to the female form.
It was in the mid-seventies that the designer really got into his stride and began to dress famous celebrities, from fashion divas such as Liza Minnelli to Lauren Bacall and Elizabeth Taylor. Halston himself became as famous as the celebrities that he styled and was a regular fixture at Studio 54 right in the beating heart of New York City. However he later lost favour in the 80’s when he began designing low-budget collections and was forced to give up his job as creative director in 1983. Halston sadly died in 1990 aged only 57.
However, recently there has been a new breath of life into the company thanks to the current success of ‘Sex and the City’. Just as with Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik before it, Halston is once again becoming a household name.
So if you want to channel elegant 1970’s style this summer just like Miss Bradshaw why not try a Halston dress. They are the epitome of Studio 54 glamour and style and the perfect look this summer.
