The Big Bag Is Back

Living in Manchester can be a daily challenge for any native. You have to adapt to the ways of our city, from skilfully avoiding the street sellers on Market Street to successfully crossing Oxford Road with the speed and skill of a gazelle.

Another element to master is Manchester’s unpredictable monsoon weather. Most modern Manchester madams will always carry around with them a few essential items to keep them looking sexy no matter what.
We have been taught from a very young age to never leave the house without items such as a trusty umbrella for example or even without the perfect pair of sunglasses for when the weather does (eventually) change. There are other items that we always need such as our mobile phones, house keys, our enormous purses that manage to cram in every card we have ever received from either a store or a bank, lipstick, make-up and (in my particular case) the latest copy of Vogue magazine.

It may seem like I am over-exaggerating, but for most modern women it is vitally important to carry these essential items with us at all times for when danger may strike. Last season was absolutely horrific for this Fashion Fiend when I heard that teeny, tiny purses and handbags were the look for 2009. The amount of times last summer that I struggled in vain to cram and push my phone back into my minuscule sequined handbag was just unbelievable. Honestly, it becomes very difficult to keep up the fem-fatale persona when you are muttering obscenities under your breath.
However, this summer the designers and fashion experts have heard my cries for change and brought back functional fashion accessories. That’s right ladies; the big handbag is back- with style!

Last week, LVMH, one of the world’s largest luxury good’s brand saw a 13% rise in its first quarter sales. The firm reportedly saw a huge rise in demand for its designer handbags. It’s no surprise really when designers keep creating such stunning pieces.
For this Fashion Fiend, it’s very difficult to pick just one handbag that stands out this season because there are just too many beautiful pieces. It’s like choosing the perfect wine- I just love them all.

For example, I currently adore Longchamp’s latest collaboration with model Kate Moss. The collection is both stylish yet functional; I personally love the small Gloucester handbag. It’s the perfect size if you are busy traveller and looks divine in rich brown.

If you have a lot of money to spend then I would recommend the Alexa handbag from Mulberry. Sidestepping the fact that it’s named after Alexa Chung, this is yet another beautiful leather bag by the creative genius that is Mulberry ltd. If anyone wanted to buy me a little gift- this would be ideal. It’s slouchy yet sophisticated style is just the thing, whether you are travelling, shopping or hitting the town. Plus it comes in a range of vibrant colours to suit all styles and tastes.

If you prefer the more retro look, then why not try a satchel. Ally Capellino’s ‘Armand’ satchel is perfect for this summer. The combination of canvas and genuine leather give the piece a more relaxed and versatile look.
However if you prefer a more outlandish approach, why not try a satchel from Blondie Mania. Their Marmara satchel is a stunning piece. It’s available in rich noir and brown but also in this eye-catching indigo shade.

It would seem that this summer, the bigger the bag, the better. I, for one, am happy to hear it!
