The American Denim Dream
The kids in America have provided us little Brits with amazing things over the years. From great diplomatic leaders such as JFK to Obama, to innovative fashion designers ranging from Donna Karen to Ralph Lauren, as well as addictive treats such as Sex and the City and of course Glee. It would seem that us Brits, we just can’t get enough of America’s fast food restaurants and addictive exports.
As a nation we are also completely obsessed with the yanks fashion stores from the colourful American Apparel to Gap and iconic Calvin Klein.
However, all this pales in comparison. Our dear friends from over the pond gave us the greatest gift of all. They shared with us one textile that will stand the test of time; Denim. Yes, it may have been originally produced in France, but it was the Americans who made it their own.
Ever since the late 70’s when a sexy male model wriggled into that first pair of Levi 501 jeans the world has been obsessed. Jackets, jeans and shorts-oh my! These items have all been made out of this durable and iconic material.
And this season denim has a new spring in its step. It has made a triumphant en-mass return to the runways, with many designers incorporating different shades of denim in their designs. From the short denim jacket that was popular throughout the 90’s to old school dungarees- both have found their way back onto the catwalk with great American confidence and panache.
Faded denim looks amazing especially when it’s teamed with this season’s sugary baby blues and candy floss pinks and pastels. For inspiration take a leaf out of Ralph Lauren’s spring and summer 2010 collection.
This fashion fiend’s has already chosen a stunning faded denim dress from (surprisingly) Marks and Spencer’s newest collection- ‘portfolio’. With its slouchy style and large pockets it’s perfect for this season because it’s so versatile and functional. You could also take inspiration from Chloe’s summer collection. Why not try mixing a denim skirt with a cool t-shirt and a pair of sexy black shorts. Combine this with a functional yet fashionable satchel and you have got the perfect relaxed look for a day of shopping.
I recommend taking a glance at Mango’s latest collection for more inspiration. They have an excellent range of denim items to suit all sizes and styles; from distressed jeans to short tailored denim jackets. I personally love their denim inspired t-shirt and it looks amazing teamed with a boho flowery skirt.
The weather forecasters may be predicting snow for our fair city but this is one fashion fiend who will be ignoring their advice, dressing in denim, popping on her shades and living the American dream this month.
