And on the 7th Day they rested . . .and reflected

London has always played the rebellious role on the fashion circuit, each year injecting a unique mix of eclectic designs and dramatic theatricals to the catwalks. It's this winning combination that has cemented Britain's capital as the global heart of creativity and fresh, undiscovered talent – and as a fashion week first timer, I was ready to be shocked and above all – inspired.

Earlier this week Vogue's Alexandra Shulman said of the forthcoming shows: “London isn't about trends, it's about everyone doing their own thing”, and after seeing all I have this week, she is right, but not in the way I expected. Many of London’s catwalks were reserved and almost composed, with clear trends and styles set out for the Autumn/Winter 10-11 season, but not the usual off the wall creations that I had anticpated.

As other fashion meccas jumped on the edgy and artistic bandwagon, synonymous with our capital, it was time for London to reflect – a break that coincided almost ceremoniously with the death of Britain's bad, but golden boy, Lee Alexander McQueen. It was inevitable that in the week that followed the death of one of the greatest British showmen there would be a noticeable void, yet collections had already been designed with simple, puritan almost mournful elements. There were still edgy, eccentric references but one thing is for sure, London is entering a new fashion era, which will undoubtedly be as unpredictable and appealingly successful as the last.
