The Futures Bright, The Futures Green!

Until recently, Green Fashion was seen to have a bit of an image problem. Few fashionistas wanted to wear ecofashion, as it was deemed to be unflattering and unappealing, and was best left to eco-warriors and Hippies.

But with the people now beginning to realise the importance of us all becoming Green, there has been a definite change in attitudes to ethical fashion over the past few years. It has become cool, with the likes of Vogue (see the November issue) and the fashion weeks devoting time and space to green/ethical clothing.

There is a bright new star emerging on the ethical scene, Manchester based label Mononoko, who have recently debuted their latest S/S 10 collection entitled Obsidian Opulence” at this years Untold, at London Fashion Week.

The S/S 10 collection is inspired by snippets of Chinua Achebe
s poem Knowing robs usfrom his collaboration Another Africa with Robert Lyons. The collection fuses Javanese Batiks with hemp, recycled fabrics and 100% organic cotton. Mononoko introduce the concept of Global Alchemythrough SS10 collection Obsidian Opulence, with an emphasis on exploring modern multiculturalism. It stems from the new ethnic reality where every culture leaves its fingerprint.

Mononoko are striving to introduce a new concept “Global Alchemy” into the ethical fashion market with an emphasis on exploring modern multiculturalism. It stems from the new ethnic reality where every culture leaves its fingerprint. From African inspired prints to Oriental and Greek subtlety, the collections uniquely fuse together universal harmonies through colour, print, texture and embellishments, in an effort to expose how our cultures and inspirations are coalescing.

Mononoko is the brainchild of creative director and head designer Mary Ononokpono, who took time out to speak to us about the brand and the longevity of Green Fashion.

“I have always felt strongly about inequalities that exist within society and in particular the inequalities that exist between western consumption and producers of raw materials in the developing world. I also felt passionately about the damage that we as consumers inflict damage on our planet through processes used to produce our goods.

“I believe that ethical fashion is not a mere fad or the latest trend. Consumer
s are becoming increasingly aware of the effects of careless consumption and are demanding a greater proportion of products with a social conscience.” - Mary Ononokpono.

Be sure to add Mononoko to your fashion directories as they are set to be big, set to be achieved through their vision of ecologically and socially sustainable fashion, with added confidence and sex appeal.
