Afflecks back from the dead (well a brief slumber)

12th April 2008

MFN popped down to the legendary establishment to check out Afflecks Day and see how the reincarnation is taking shape. After a rocky start to the year and the uncertainty of Afflecks future on all stall holders minds, founder Elaine Walsh has handed the reins fully over to Bruntwood and new manager Tony Martin and Afflecks looks set to stay.

Every floor was buzzing and even though not all units have been filled yet there were plenty of new faces there to compliment the old. A fresh lick of paint and artwork from local artists seems to have breathed a new lease of life into the iconic institution. Bruntwood have pledged to inject around £1million into the building.

“Afflecks Day is the stallholder’s way of thanking everyone in Manchester for their continued support. We also want to get people down to see that the legend continues and to celebrate everything Afflecks. We want to make this market bigger and better and hope Afflecks Day will help us on our way,” said new Afflecks Manager Tony Martin.

By the looks of all the moshing to local bands on the top floor, Manchester’s youngest fashion tribes still have somewhere to reside on a Saturday afternoon and the gesture of Afflecks Day was greeted with much appreciation.
